How to Play Click the Button
The complete breakdown of every system that drives your progress.
Understanding the Systems
Click the Button rewards patience and strategic thinking over raw clicking speed. While clicking faster certainly helps in the short term, understanding how the games five core systems interact — clicking, chests, items, money, and skills — is what separates efficient players from those who plateau early.
Clicking Mechanics
The button is the centre of everything. Each press triggers a fixed sequence:
- A chest spawns and opens immediately, revealing one item
- Money is added to your balance equal to your current Money Per Click (MPC) value
- If you have passive income skills active, money is added equal to your Money Per Second (MPS) value
- Your total click counter increments, which contributes to certain achievements
Your base MPC starts at 1 and increases through upgrades and item bonuses. MPS starts at 0 and only becomes meaningful after you have purchased your first passive income upgrades.
Chest System
Chests are the primary source of items. Every chest contains exactly one item, drawn from a pool that shifts based on your current progress level. The game uses a weighted rarity system — Broken-tier items drop most frequently, while Extraterrestrial-tier items are extraordinarily rare.
The six rarity tiers in order from most to least common are: Broken, Nice, Expensive, Robust, Nocturnal, and Extraterrestrial. Each tier has a fixed pool of items within it, and each item within a tier has its own individual drop rate. Some items are genuinely common within their tier, while others sit at the very bottom of their tier rarity and are nearly as hard to find as the tier above.
Chests do not queue or stack — you must click to open each one individually. This means your clicking speed directly limits how fast you can acquire items. Skills and upgrades that increase your effective CPS (clicks per second) are among the most valuable investments in the game.
Item System
Items in Click the Button are persistent bonuses that apply their effects automatically once collected. There is no equipment or inventory management — every item you collect simply adds its bonus to your totals permanently. The game tracks collection progress for each rarity tier, and unlocking all items in a tier grants a bonus multiplier.
The fifteen Steam achievements are tightly linked to the collection system. Several achievements require you to collect a specific number of items from a given tier, and two achievements — Nice Collection and Robust Collection — are awarded for completing full tier collections.
Items can be categorised by their primary effect:
- Click boosters: increase MPC directly or multiplicatively
- Passive boosters: increase MPS
- Global multipliers: increase all earnings by a percentage
- Collection bonuses: provide extra rewards when a tier is complete
Money Economy
Money is earned from clicking and passive income, and spent on upgrades and skills. There is no trading, no shop, and no microtransactions beyond the initial purchase. The entire economy is a closed loop.
Upgrades are split into two branches. The Click Power branch increases your MPC in stages. Each level of Click Power upgrade costs more than the last but provides a proportionally larger return. The Passive Income branch works the same way for MPS. Both branches have diminishing returns at higher levels, which means a balanced approach tends to yield the best results.
Skill System
Skills are special abilities that become available after reaching certain milestones. They are permanent upgrades that persist across sessions. Skills range from simple MPC bonuses to complex effects that change how the chest system works.
The Skill Tree guide covers every available skill, its requirements, and the most effective build orders for different play styles. Some skills are essential for endgame progression, while others are quality-of-life improvements that become available only after you have mastered the basics.
Progression Curve
The first hour of Click the Button is spent learning the core loop and building a basic economic foundation. Between hours one and ten, the skill system opens up and you begin making meaningful choices about which upgrades to prioritise. After ten hours, the collection system becomes the primary driver of progress, as completing tier sets provides powerful bonuses that accelerate everything else.
There is no fixed endgame — the game continues to reward play indefinitely through increasingly rare item drops and the satisfaction of completing your collection. Players who have spent fifty or more hours in the game report that the late-game loop remains engaging because the collection chase provides a shifting set of goals.
Key Tips for Efficient Play
Balance Click Power and Passive Income investments. Pure clickers often find themselves hitting a wall where further MPC upgrades cost more than they earn in a reasonable time frame, while pure passive builds take too long to get started. A hybrid approach avoids both pitfalls.
Pay attention to collection bonuses. Completing a tier set does not just give you the satisfaction of the achievement — it provides a permanent multiplier that applies to all future earnings. This makes completing collections one of the most efficient long-term investments in the game.
Use the notification system. The game announces milestones, new item unlocks, and collection completions in the top-right corner. These are easy to miss during active play, but they mark important progress points that you do not want to overlook.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to common questions about the game.
What is the difference between Money Per Click and Money Per Second?
Money Per Click (MPC) is earned every time you physically press the button. Money Per Second (MPS) is earned automatically by the game clock and accumulates even when you are not clicking. Early game, MPC is your primary income source. Late game, MPS from skilled passive builds can exceed MPC.
Do items ever expire or get removed from my inventory?
No. Every item you collect stays in your inventory permanently and its bonus applies at all times. There is no way to lose collected items.
Is there a way to increase how fast I can click programmatically?
Auto-clickers and macros are not supported by the game and may trigger a ban if used. The game does not have an official binding for rapid clicking — you are intended to click manually or use in-game skills that increase your effective CPS.
