The Skill System
Skills in Click the Button are permanent upgrades that become available as you reach specific milestones in your play. Unlike upgrades, which you purchase repeatedly for increasing costs, each skill is a one-time unlock that provides a fixed bonus for the entire lifetime of your save file.
The skill system opens up gradually as you play. Your first skill unlocks after approximately one hundred total clicks, and subsequent skills become available at progressively higher thresholds. By the time you have played for twenty hours, you will have access to most or all of the skill tree.
The Skill Tree page covers every available skill in detail, including unlock conditions, exact effects, and the optimal order to unlock them. The Best Build page provides a specific skill point allocation strategy for players who want a optimised progression path.
Why Skills Matter More Than Upgrades
Basic upgrades improve your MPC and MPS within their respective branches, but skills provide effects that upgrades cannot replicate. Some skills change fundamental mechanics — for example, one skill might cause each chest to have a chance to contain a bonus item, while another might cause your passive income to continue accumulating at double speed during active clicking sessions.
These qualitative changes to how the game works are not available through any amount of upgrade spending. Skills are the primary differentiator between players at the same upgrade level. Two players with identical upgrade investments but different skill selections will have meaningfully different income rates and collection speeds.
Skill Points and Allocation
Skill points are earned through play progress rather than purchased with money. You do not make an economic trade-off when choosing which skill to unlock — you simply need to meet the unlock condition. This means there is no opportunity cost to acquiring skills beyond the time required to reach their unlock conditions.
Because skill points are not purchased, the optimal strategy is to unlock every skill you can as quickly as you can reach their conditions. The only decision points are the order in which you pursue unlock conditions, which the Best Build guide addresses.
Skill Tree Structure
The skill tree is organised into three branches that roughly correspond to the three main progression axes in the game: Click Power, Passive Income, and Collection Optimisation. Each branch contains skills that amplify that axis, plus a few cross-branch skills that provide general bonuses.
The Click Power branch includes skills that increase your effective CPS, boost MPC directly, and provide multiplicative bonuses to click-based income. The Passive Income branch includes skills that increase MPS, extend passive accumulation during active play, and provide bonuses to offline earnings. The Collection Optimisation branch includes skills that improve drop rates, increase collection set bonuses, and provide special effects for rare item drops.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to common questions about the game.
Can I respec my skill points?
No. Skill points are permanent one-time unlocks. Once you have unlocked a skill it stays active for the lifetime of your save file. Choose carefully, though the game provides enough skill points to unlock all skills eventually.
How many total skills are there?
The skill tree contains approximately twenty skills across three branches. The Skill Tree page has the complete list with exact counts.
Do skills affect achievements?
Some skill effects can indirectly make achievements easier to unlock. For example, a skill that increases your effective CPS helps you open chests faster, which contributes to collection speed achievements.
